What the heck is "positioning?" Should we even care?
Yes, we should care. In fact, positioning is the most powerful marketing concept on the planet.
Unfortunately, most marketers out there don't really have a clear idea of what positioning is, how to use it, and how powerfully it can impact a business. The really cool part is that when I define it, you will see that you actually already use it every single day.
Do you ever stop to think about how the top people in a company got to where they are? Well, if you think for a second they got there by handing out flyers and hitting up their friends and family, then sit down for a second.
They didn't get to the top by doing the things they trained you to do. At least the vast majority of them didn't. In order to get to the top and earn ten, twenty, or thirty, or even a hundred grand a month, one must know how to position themselves accordingly, and learn to become a marketer. You simply cannot be an "employee" for your company; you have to be able to stand on your own two feet, make accurate decisions, have the flexibility to wear many different "hats" in your business, and have a working knowledge of how to wear them all well.
One of the most powerful and important tools you can and should be using is positioning. Positioning is the Art and Science of finding those that have a need, want, or desire for what you have, and positioning yourself in their pathway of consumption. Positioning is about letting your prospect know that you have exactly what they are looking for, and that you are going to take them by the hand and make sure they get the most out of your solution.
Positioning is having droves of prospects seeking you out because of your expertise in a certain area. Because you are a professional, and you have positioned your expertise to prospects seeking your types of solutions. When you can tap into the market of the masses (offline or online) then you are officially positioning yourself. Prospects seek you - instead of you chasing and begging your prospects. That is how a huge business is grown from scratch.
The best part about positioning is that anyone can do it. This isn't like it's the KFC secret family recipe, it's simple. It takes some work to learn the ropes, but once you got 'em, then you're set. There's no reason why you can't do the exact same thing. Hold on...
...OK, sorry about that. I had to pause this dialogue and take a phone call. You see, I have people calling me up all throughout the day looking for the types of products and services that I offer. Do you think you could close prospects into your business that called you with their credit card in hand, ready to get it done? Of course...
Positioning is the best way to grow a huge enterprise quickly and efficiently. It starts with creating a simple website. Nothing fancy, nothing that requires a ton of work, just something nice and easy.
You focus this website on your product and your expertise. Nothing about the opportunity. I'll talk about that in a different note, and that will blow your mind!
To wrap up, if you want the bottom line on getting to the top of your comp plan in less than a year, there are really only two ways to do it:
1. Swing over a database from a previous organization. If you are a professional "networker", then you probably have multiple databases that you can access to grow a new enterprise. Just cross-recruit them into your new business, and POW, you're done.
2. Learn the art and science of positioning. If you don't have a huge organization from a previous venture, then this is hands-down the quickest, most sure-fire way to get it done. It's without doubt one of the most powerful techniques I can share with you. And once you get it down...it'll turn your business into a virtual ATM machine that spits out $50 bills on command.
